Why Liverpool fans should support Man City in the Champions League

Hear us out. This may seem like a nonsense thing to say but just hear us out. Liverpool fans should want Man City to do well in the Champions League, we should want them to get all the way to the semi finals before they get knocked out in the most humiliating way possible, or the most heartbreaking way possible – last season’s exit to Tottenham Hotspur would be a great example for the footballing gods to follow. We should want them to do well for a while for a couple of reasons:

Man City have much better squad depth than Liverpool. Pep Guardiola has spent a king’s ransom a dozen times over to assemble the strongest squad the Premier League has ever seen, they have at least 2 world class players in every position, sometimes even 3. We need Man City to play as many games as they can outside of their Premier League campaign. We need Pep Guardiola to be forced to rotate and in turn tire out his phenomenal squad. If Man City were to exit the Champions League early, they would have the silver lining of being able to focus all their energies on retaining the Premier League title.

To be knocked out of the Champions League is devastating. The closest Man City have ever come to the final of the competition was a semi final defeat to Real Madrid in 2016. If the Citizens were to be knocked out at the semi final stage again this season it could be a blow to morale at a key part of the season. The Reds will likely have to win each of their games in April and May, we’ll take all the advantages we can get. We just need City to tire themselves out then have their hearts broken.
