Red Bull Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch has given his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s visit to Anfield. Salzburg arrive on Merseyside on the back of a 6-2 opening matchday victory over Genk, a match in which their prodigy forward Erling Håland scored a hat-trick. The Austrians are currently top of their domestic league with just one draw and no losses this campaign.
The press conference was broadcast live on the Red Bull Salzburg official site. Marsch told the gathered the media, “we’ve talked a lot this week about how good Liverpool is, they have no weaknesses.” This is high praise indeed from the American coach but it shows a sensibility about the gaffer. His side are coming up against the best team in Europe at the moment and are stepping into the cauldron that is Anfield. They will have studied Liverpool’s last European home tie, the heroic 4-0 victory over Barcelona in May that sent the Reds into the Champions League final in Madrid. May’s fixture showed that the Anfield atmosphere can beat teams before they step out onto the pitch.
There have been many comparisons drawn between the Jesse Marsch and Jurgen Klopp’s styles of play. The parallels between the two rapidly attacking sides are not lost on the American, he noted “the way that they’re managed, we play similarly”. Whether or not the similarities between the sides is an advantage for Klopp remains to be seen, it takes one to beat one after all. Kopites will be encouraged by Jesse Marsch’s press conference as he seems well aware of the task ahead of his side.
