Erling Haaland is supposed to be the one to watch when Liverpool face RB Salzburg. The Reds, however, have had a boost in that regard.
Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that the prolific forward is sick and may not recover in time.
“The next two days are important. He is checked by a doctor every day,” he told Viasport. “He’s sick, and we don’t quite know when he will be back. Hopefully over the next few days.”
Regardless of whether he recovers to play, it sounds unlikely that Haaland will be at his best. Seeing as the Reds need to win, that’s brilliant news.
Haaland has exploded this season, scoring 17 goals in 12 games. His Champions League debut against Genk went incredibly well, too, as he bagged a hattrick.
Liverpool will have a far easier time against Salzburg if the teenager doesn’t play. There’s no doubting that at all and this is good news – but it is still a bit of a shame.
As we said after his hattrick v Genk, Liverpool are well placed to have a look at the forward. Haaland is one of the most exciting young talents around but Jurgen Klopp and co. have the enviable opportunity of a first-hand look at him.
That’s gone if he doesn’t play, though.
