The Reds were very fortunate winners against Sheffield United on Saturday. The early kick off was entirely unremarkable. Liverpool dominated possession for most of the game but rarely seriously threatened, the hosts also had some glaring chances that the Reds were lucky to survive. A speculative effort by Gini Wijnaldum was fumbled by Dean Henderson, the ball rolling between the unfortunate goalkeeper’s legs. Despite the Liverpool performance being well below par, the Reds managed to come home with three points and despite the performance being well below par – it was our most enjoyable win of the season so far.
Winning ugly is the hallmark of champions. Winning ugly is something that Liverpool have struggled to do over the years, on days when we weren’t at the races, we would scrape a draw or drop all 3 points. Somehow, on Saturday, the Reds dug in and resisted the home side’s valiant advances whilst maintaining their own forward pressure.
Glaring chances were missed, Roberto Firmino teed up an easy goal for Sadio Mane but the Senegalese winger struck the post. Mo Salah was through on goal but Dean Henderson pulled off a confident save, though Salah should have done much better with the opportunity.
Obviously, another bonus from the win was that the howling error for Liverpool’s goal was made by Dean Henderson, currently on loan from the Reds’ arch nemesis Manchester United.
Now that the Reds are able to win ugly, they will be one step closer to winning the league. A win at Bramall Lane has put the Anfield side one step closer to that elusive title, we just need to keep winning ugly.
