Liverpool should let James Milner go this summer if Leeds United win promotion from the Championship. The 33 year old midfielder is out of contract at the end of this season and will turn 34 in January. Leeds are currently top of the Championship and devastatingly missed out on a return to the Premier League last season. They notched 3 losses in their last 5 games of the season, slipping out of the automatic promotion spots in the process.

Milner has been an invaluable member of the Liverpool squad since his arrival in 2015. He has filled in wherever asked, popping up either side of defence as well as in the middle of the park and in front of the defence. He began his career at Leeds United and is a fiercely proud Yorkshireman. With United having been out of the Premier League for 15 years, he would definitely be interested in a return should they regain top division status.

Stepping up to the Premier League from the Championship is a huge task. The gulf in class can be insurmountable for some sides, players with experience in the top flight are vital to survival. Milner would be able to provide his beloved home side with over a decade of experience in the division.

Milly has been incredible for us. He has captained us on many occasions, he has won a Champions League with us. If he decides he doesn’t want to extend his contract at the end of the year, we should hold the door open for him to rejoin his boyhood side. He has earned the utmost respect from the club and the fans, it is only fitting he should finish his career back where it started.
