Dutch prodigy should start ahead of seasoned Liverpool international

It’s time to call it a day on Dejan Lovren. The Croatian international has been a loyal servant to the club since his arrival from Southampton back in 2014 but it is time to admit that his time at Liverpool is up. The World Cup finalist currently finds himself 4th choice centre back at the Reds. He should, however, be 5th choice. Lovren played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool took on MK Dons on Wednesday night and the ex-Southampton man was less than convincing throughout. Summer signing Sepp van den Berg should be given the berth of 4th choice in Jürgen Klopp’s pecking order.

Liverpool signed Sepp van den Berg from Pec Zwolle over the summer. The towering Dutch defender was a sensation over in the Eredivisie. He was named in the team of the week for the division when he was just 16 years old and broke Clarence Seedorf’s record to become the youngest ever player to reach 10 appearances in the division, reaching the milestone aged just 16 years and 256 days old.

Dejan Lovren on the other hand sat out most of last season for Liverpool. His place in the starting lineup had been forfeited to the indominible partnership of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. The combination of experience and youth were impassable at the start of the season. When Joe Gomez broke his leg at Burnley, Joel Matip was afforded a chance in the side and has never looked back.

When the Reds played MK Dons, Lovren looked back to his calamitous self at times, with an error of his conceding a glaring chance for the home side early on. It is time to give the promise of Sepp van den Berg a shot ahead of the aging, hapless Croatian. He has been a loyal servant but it is time to move on and look to the future.
