Manchester United are rumoured to be chasing Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona, according to The Independent. Liverpool were heavily linked with the French international over the summer, as reported by The Mirror. If Liverpool sign Dembele it would be a blow for the Red Devils as they certainly need reinforcements in attack. They were left without a recognised striker at West Ham last weekend when Marcus Rashford was forced off by injury. United sold Romelu Lukaku and loaned out Alexis Sanchez over the summer, leaving them with little cover offensively.
With United’s front line being so stretched, they will certainly be looking to bolster their options in January. Ousmane Dembele matches their business model, he would be a marquee signing, cost a lot of money and would sell a lot of shirts. He also has a bit of a bad boy reputation having skipped Barcelona training before. So should Liverpool rival their old local nemesis for the Frenchman’s signature?
He would cost a lot of money and that isn’t particularly Liverpool’s profile as of late. The Reds’ only big money buys in recent years have been largely funded by player sales. Also, his disciplinary record at Barcelona isn’t cohesive to the squad mentality that Jürgen Klopp has nurtured. However, he is undeniably one of the world’s brightest young talents and he would shine at any side. Liverpool are crying out for depth in attack, or even competition. As it stands we have to pray for an injury free season in order to maintain pace with Man City and their 2 world class players for every position. If Liverpool sign Dembele they could step up to the next level. Is he worth the price?
