For years, Liverpool have produced some of the game’s greatest talents. There was Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, now there is Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, apart from Trent, we haven’t seen any youth players given a shot at the first team, not even being given a run out for the final 15 of an already won game. At a time when other Premier League rivals are introducing the latest and greatest their club have to offer, the Reds need to be giving the Liverpool academy more of a chance.
We have one of the best youth systems in English football, if we go by which players have come through the ranks in the last couple of decades. Gerrard progressed through the Liverpool system to become one of the football’s greatest ever players, Michael Owen won a Ballon d’Or. So why are we not giving some vital game time to budding youngsters?
We have given run outs to the likes of Curtis Jones and Ki Jana Hoever in cup competitions but it is not enough if we want to keep pace with other Premier League sides. It looks as though this could be the year for Manchester United’s teenage prodigy Mason Greenwood, Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka scored on his European debut.
There is no doubt that the talent is there. The only difficulty is that the Reds are doing too well at the minute. First team squad players are struggling to get into the starting XI each week. However, when we are winning a game comfortably, where is the harm in giving Rhian Brewster or Curtis Jones a few minutes experience? We need to give the Liverpool academy a better chance – we don’t need another Bobby Duncan.
