Years after the initial speculation, what chance Chelsea midfielder Willian finally becoming a Liverpool player this summer?
The Brazilian winger was close to joining the club on deadline day back in 2013. He ultimately opted for Chelsea and has been their ever since. However, the 31-year-old is in the final year of his contract at the Blues and is yet to be offered a new deal at the club.
If he becomes available on a free transfer, Liverpool should move to snap up the player.
The Reds are currently being linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho who will demand a hefty transfer fee. Despite being an incredible talent he is unlikely to force his way into the Liverpool front three.
Willian offers a cheap yet world-class alternative to Sancho and will likely be available this summer.
At 31 he doesn’t fit the mould of players brought in under FSG who like to invest in young talent. However, they have been known to make an exception when players become available on a free transfer.
Most notably, James Milner joined the club for free in 2015 despite being 29 at the time.He has since gone on to be a massive success at Anfield and could yet still earn himself a new deal this season.
Willian is certainly capable of replicating this success in a Liverpool shirt. A player with pace, vision and experience he offers a viable alternative on either wing.
