Chelsea got their Champions League campaign underway in disappointing fashion with a home defeat to Valencia on Tuesday night. The Blues were frustrated by a determined Valencian performance and found themselves 1-0 losers at the end of the night. Ross Barkley passed up an opportunity to equalise for the Stamford Bridge side when he missed a late penalty. The Blues night got off to a bad start when Mason Mount was forced off with an ankle injury after 16 minutes. The Mount injury could prove crucial to the weekend’s game.
Frank Lampard hasn’t provided a Mount injury update yet, only saying that they will assess the situation over the next 48 hours. The knock was the result of a reckless challenge by Arsenal old boy Francis Coquelin. Chelsea have come to rely on the 20 year old midfielder this year as he has sought to fill the huge gap left by Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid. He has started in all 5 of Frank Lampard’s first Premier League games as Chelsea manager. The youngster has bagged 3 goals in these 5 starts, providing a haul of key passes but no assists along the way.
He will be a huge miss for the West End side if the gaffer doesn’t provide a positive Mason Mount injury update before the weekend. The versatile attacking midfielder played under the Chelsea boss at Derby County last season, performing alongside Reds prospect Harry Wilson. The freshly capped England international has had many comparisons between his and his manager’s game drawn by the media. Liverpool used to hate playing against Frank Lampard, to have his mini-me out of Sunday’s game would be a big boost for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
