Liverpool were heavily linked with a number of big money moves over the summer, with none coming to fruition. With a blind faith in Michael Edwards’ recruitment team, it is safe to assume they have something big in the works for the future. Kai Havertz and Kylian Mbappe were two players on Kopites’ wishlists. Liverpool signing Havertz would be better than buying Mbappe. Here’s why:
Money. Money is a huge factor, Kylian Mbappe is likely to cost nearly twice as much as Kai Havertz, with that sort of money, the Reds could even have a pop at getting Sancho alongside Havertz. Aside from a transfer fee, Mbappe will command much higher wages than the German.
Profile. Liverpool never sign anybody bigger than the club – this is not to say that Mbappe is above Liverpool’s station – it is to say that we have steered clear of signing players superstars in the interest of squad harmony. This is no comment on Mbappe’s personality, we are sure he has a very professional attitude, but you cannot ignore his humongous reputation. Havertz would arrive without the burdensome tag of being the next Messi or Ronaldo.
Tactics. Havertz fits into Liverpool’s system more seamlessly than Mbappe. The German is versatile, he can play in centre midfield or in a more advanced role behind the striker. The Leverkusen man actually bares striking similarities with Roberto Firmino, the Brazilian was playing as an advanced midfielder for Hoffenheim before he was converted into an industrious number 9 under Jürgen Klopp. Havertz’ versatility means he will have more avenues into the Liverpool XI.
