Arsenal have been having a torrid time of late, at least by the lofty standards they set themselves in the last decade. The Gunners capitulated last weekend against Watford, losing hold of a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with the Hornets. It wasn’t their first 2-2 draw of the season, they also matched the result at home against bitter North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Gooners legend Sol Campbell believes a bit of James Milner is what Arsenal need. He spoke to talkSPORT about how the ex England international would help the Gunners and took the time to compare him to another Arsenal icon.
Campbell will forever be revered around Arsenal. During his playing days he was a commanding centre half and a key part of the Arsenal invincibles side of 2003-04. Speaking with talkSPORT he said “You look at someone like Milner, the attitude…that’s the kind of attitude Arsenal need”. The towering defender believes that the Yorkshireman’s approach reminds him of a fellow invincible, describing Milly as having “the Ray Parlour attitude.”
One of the reasons that the 33 year old Champions League winner has been so successful in his later career is his ability to stay young but also his love of the game. Many players may have become jaded in Milner’s situation, he has been forced to play every position on the pitch throughout his career, even in the final act of his journey he is regularly filling in at full back for Jürgen Klopp’s side. Campbell believes that this passion of the game is what makes the midfielder such a special talent, he continued: “The love of football and desire to keep going…I look at Milner and think we need a little bit of that at Arsenal”.
The Reds are incredibly lucky to have such a versatile, energetic and professional talent. Sol Campbell’s admiration is well warranted.
