There’s one statistic that really stands out after Liverpool lost to Napoli on Tuesday. They have only won one of their last seven away games in the Champions League group stage.
In fact, Liverpool have a strange record away from home in Europe lately. For a team who won the competition last year and finished as runners-up the year before, they struggle a bit.
Liverpool lost to Napoli last season, too, but also to Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade. The first two were always going to be difficult but the last defeat was truly awful.
But then the Reds tore apart Bayern Munich in Bavaria and then Porto away, too. After that came a bizarre game in Barcelona where Liverpool played brilliantly and were thrashed 3-0.
Liverpool’s sole win away in the group stage came the year before when they beat Maribor 7-0. But they failed to win their other two – 1-1 v Spartak Moscow, and 3-3 v Sevilla.
But again, they qualified and again they pushed through to the final. It creates a bizarre statistic – this is a team that hasn’t lost a two-legged tie for years, but they’re inconsistent away from home.
And that’s why Liverpool fans don’t need to worry about the statistic after losing to Napoli – it doesn’t seem to matter.
Be it losing all three away games or getting thumped 3-0 at Camp Nou, the Reds find a way through.
