Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann believes that the Reds are favourites for the Champions League this year, alongside Premier League rivals Man City. The lanky German had spells at both clubs and is well respected by both sets of fans.
A commanding defensive midfielder in his day, Hamann scored the final goal at the old Wembley stadium. The retired player and 2005 Champions League winner, made his comments in German outlet SID.
In an interview published on the 16th of September 2019, he said “I think that City and Liverpool will set the standard [in the Champions League]”. The German has pedigree when it comes to analysing the European competition. Didi came on in the 46th minute to replace Steve Finnan in Istanbul and he is hailed as one of the turning points in the historic comeback – when he entered the fray, Liverpool were still 3-0 down.
He doesn’t feel that a Bundesliga side has a shot at the title this year. He described Bayern Munich as “in the second row” of teams vying for the ultimate prize.
This backing will delight Liverpool fans. Man City just don’t seem to have what it takes in Europe, they have never made the semi finals. Jürgen Klopp on the other hand has won every single two legged knocked out tie since arriving at Anfield.
With the Reds so unstoppable in Europe and Man City so frail, this backing from a Liverpool legend is sure to boost the mood in the Melwood camp ahead of their opening game of the campaign against Napoli tonight.
