Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has reflected on his team’s nightmare night on Merseyside and discussed how the loss shaped their season.
The 32-year-old Argentine had helped Barcelona to a commanding lead in the semi-final first leg. The Spanish giants came to Anfield with a three-goal cushion.
Despite having one foot in the champions league final the Catalans were eliminated from the competition after a dismal second leg display. Liverpool thrashed the La Liga winners to claim a famous 4-0 victory and a chance to win a sixth European Cup.
Reflecting on the match with Sport he said “Our elimination from the Champions League made our entire season look bad when we did really well.
“One bad performance, even if you have a lead, could see you be eliminated. The English stadiums help their teams a lot. It’s also important to score goals away from home if you are going to win the Champions League.”
The legendary Argentina forward appears seems to point towards the Anfield crowd as a reason for defeat.
Barcelona failed to find the single away goal needed to wrap up the tie, whilst Liverpool’s 12th man roared them into the final.
The rest is history.
