Caoimhin Kelleher demonstrated some brilliant footwork for the Ireland U21s this week.
The young goalkeeper, who has become Liverpool’s second choice this season, clearly has a lot of talent. He looked incredibly composed as he waltzes past opposition forwards, maintaining possession.

It’s exactly what we want to see from a Liverpool goalkeeper. Not only does Kelleher keep the ball, he looks so calm in doing so. It suggests he’s not just doing it because he has to – it’s what comes naturally.
We know how much Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp want that ability. It played a huge part in Alisson Becker’s arrival, for instance, and playing out from the back is an important tactic for the side.
Kelleher is the young, up-and-coming goalkeeper at the club and so needs to have this trait. He needs to be honing it, making sure he’s in position to take over from Alisson in the long-run. He admits he’s learning from him, too, which obviously helps.
That’s the goal with any young player and so you need to see these traits. Similarly, for example, we’ll be hoping to see Rhian Brewster press like Roberto Firmino – that’s the special trait he needs to take over long-term.
Kelleher appears to have the footwork down and that certainly bodes well for a future with Liverpool.
