There has been much excitement in the Liverpool fan base surrounding the arrivals of Harvey Elliott and Sepp Van Den Berg. Jürgen Klopp’s side signed the pair over the summer.

Elliott (16) – a lifelong Liverpool fan – arrived from Fulham while Van Den Berg (17) joined from PEC Zwolle. The duo have failed to make a competitive senior appearance so far for Liverpool and could be left waiting even longer.

Many Kopites were hoping to see Elliott and Van Den Berg make their senior debuts against MK Dons in the League Cup on the 25th of September. However, due to the infinite wisdom of the powers that be – they may be robbed of the chance.

The EFL Trophy is a cup competed for by the 48 teams of League One and League Two as well as 16 youth sides from the Premier League and Championship. Liverpool have entered a side in the competition for the first time. The U21 side lost their opening game of the tournament 3-2 against Oldham in August. Elliott grabbed his first Liverpool goal in the fixture.

Unfortunately for Van Den Berg and Elliott, the Reds’ next game in the EFL Trophy is against Fleetwood on the 25th of September. The game takes place on the same day as the senior side’s cup clash with MK Dons. The management team will have to make a big call as to where the youngsters find themselves come match-day.
