CIES Football Observatory have released a study into transfer spending that makes Liverpool look impressive.

The study shows the total cost of each squad in the top five European leagues. Liverpool come seventh overall – clearly quite high but noticeably low for the European champions.

They have Liverpool at €639m spent on their current squad. That’s €58m less than 6th, Barcelona (€697m) and considerably less than Juventus in 5th (€719m) and Manchester United in 4th (€751m).

But to really show how Liverpool have done, just look at the top spot – Manchester City with a squad worth over €1.014bn. That’s the most expensive squad in history and worth over €100m more than second, Paris Saint-Germain.

That’s the team that Liverpool are battling with and keeping up the pace with. Really, that’s an incredible achievement as it’s coming up on €400m more expensive than what Jurgen Klopp uses.

Then there’s the fact that Liverpool’s squad is considerably cheaper than even United’s and Real Madrid’s – and an awful lot better.

No one really needs telling that Liverpool have done brilliantly but this transfer study highlights how brilliantly.

We’re seeing something very special at Anfield and it should be considered as such. Really, it’s a lot more impressive than what’s happening up the M62 at the Etihad.
