Andy Lonergan was arguably Liverpool’s shock signing of the summer. How many Reds fans even knew his name? With Alisson away on international duty and Simon Mignolet completing a move to Club Bruges, Jürgen Klopp was down to the bare bones for his tour of the USA.
Arise, Lonergan. The former Leeds goalkeeper was signed on a temporary contract to provide depth for the Red’s tour of America. Following an injury to Alisson against Norwich, the veteran was signed up on a one-year contract.
Since signing for the Reds on a permanent basis, the veteran keeper has found himself on the bench in a Super Cup final. Not bad for a goalie that was recently out of contract at Middlesbrough.
Lonergan has been impressed by the standard of coaching at Melwood. In an interview published on the 8th of September 2019, the Englishman told the Lancashire Post: “Jürgen Klopp is brilliant, all his staff are”.
Given that Lonergan’s most recent appearances were at Rochdale, the standard in training has been a huge step up. This gulf in class hasn’t gone unnoticed by the journeyman, he commented: “If you aren’t on your game in training, you will get found out straight away…the standard of work and finishing in training is brilliant”.
The shot stopper’s comments will be music to the ears of Reds fans. Attitude in training is vital to a successful domestic campaign and with Liverpool chasing a first top flight title in 30 years, they’ll need to be pushing themselves to the limits at Melwood.
