Up against the best, here is why Van Dijk deserves the Ballon d’Or more than Messi or Ronaldo.

Van Dijk has become an institution for the Liverpool defence. When we signed him in 2018 for £75 million, critics wondered if he would live up to his price tag. Fast forward two seasons, the 28 year-old defender has helped the team win the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup. He has also won PFA Players’ Player of the Year (2018-19) and UEFA’s Men’s Player of the Year.

Why he deserves it more than his competitors?

Messi and Ronaldo are legendary players and will remain so twenty years in the future.

However, if the award was just given to players who score lots of goals or assists, defenders would have no chance. What we should be basing this award on is how well the team performs with and without them.

Messi and Ronaldo are game-changers, but they didn’t make as much of an impact to their teams as Van Dijk did last year.

Before Van Dijk’s arrival, Liverpool kept 12 clean sheets and finished with 76 points. In his first full season (2019), he helped to keep 21 of them, with the team ending on 97 points. This is an accomplishment itself as it was seen to be the third-highest total in the history of the Premier-League.

We also cannot forget one how he was named Defender of the Season for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League campaign.  While playing in the European competition, the Dutch defender had managed to keep five (out of twelve) clean sheets (UEFA). One of these even was against Barcelona, where Van Dijk helped to warn off Messi and Suarez in one of the greatest comebacks.

Messi and Ronaldo are exceptional players, but Van Dijk should win. He deserves to for what he accomplished last season.
