The Serie A outfit has reportedly ended their interest in signing the Croatian this summer, according to Italian website Calciomercato.
A deal to sign Lovren proved to expensive for Milan and they have subsequently decided not to keep pursuing him and he will likely remain at the club for the 2018/19 season.
He’s never really been a fan favourite but with Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and, of course, Virgil van Dijk all ahead of him in the pecking order, he won’t see as much game time as he has in the past.
Keeping Lovren at the club despite interest from AC Milan is a wise move as he is pretty much the best fourth-choice centre back around and has plenty of experience to add to the side when he is involved.
As he showed with a couple of costly errors against Manchester City, his decision making, awareness and concentration are nowhere near as strong as Virgil van Dijk’s.
The Croatian could learn a thing or two from his Dutch teammate but he will never be on the same level but the Reds don’t need him to be anything more than a reliable backup.
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are set to battle it out for the spot in the starting lineup alongside van Dijk and it seems as though, for the time being at least, that Matip has won the race to start the season in the starting XI.
The new Premier League season is underway in just two short weeks and the Reds will want to start like a house on fire and kick off in style when they host Norwich City at Anfield.
