Liverpool are keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, according to Bild, who report the Reds want to add the 20-goal midfielder to their ranks.
Many supporters might be desperate to see Liverpool re-sign former Red Philippe Coutinho this summer but 19-year-old Kai Havertz is arguably the smart choice.
Despite his youth, Havertz was the third highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga last season as Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski were the only players in the league to outscore him.
Bild claim that Bayer Leverkusen don’t want to sell him for anything less than €100million (£89.9m) and while that is an astronomical fee, there is every chance this young lad repays that fee in full over the length of a five-year contract.
Havertz is quick and skilful on the ball but what makes him such an effective goalscorer is his intelligence.
Not only is he able to sense and predict the direction of play before most would but he has perfected the art of timing his run into the box to score on the run much like Frank Lampard did so many times for Chelsea in the 2000s.
Liverpool haven’t had a player like that for a long time and while Steven Gerrard was Captain Fantastic and scored some of the most ridiculous goals from range, he was an all-rounder and not focussed on the final third as much as Lampard was.
Signing Havertz would give Klopp the goals from midfield that his side needs to match the likes of Manchester City and would be a signing that could potentially make the club money if they do sell him on in the future because he’s already worth £90m – imagine what he would be worth after up to five years under Jurgen Klopp.
The German midfielder is well on his way to becoming one of the world’s very best players and Liverpool need to make sure he’s banging in the goals at the Kop End not at Camp Nou or the Allianz Arena.
