Head coach Gerard Lopez confirms to RMC Sport that Liverpool have spoken to Nicolas Pepe about a move to Anfield but have yet to talk to Lille.
Since signing Sepp van den Berg and sanctioning a few loan spells for fringe squad members, Liverpool have gone very quiet in the transfer market and threaten to remain that way until the window closes.
One player that is consistently linked with Liverpool is Nicolas Pepe and the Lille forward has spoken to the Reds about joining them this summer, his manager Gerard Lopez has confirmed.
The Lille boss told RMC Sport: “I know there have been discussions with the player, not with us as a club, Liverpool has players in those positions, and I read that maybe there were players who could leave, or not.
“I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.”
At the end of June, reliable Ligue 1 journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi claimed that Lille value Pepe at €80million (£72.2m) which might be problematic for the Reds hence the apparent lack of progress.
Lopez says that Liverpool are yet to open negotiations with them and given that Pepe’s agent admitted last week that PSG is a possibility for his client, there is a chance that he is waiting to see what happens with Neymar as the Brazilian is reportedly looking to leave the French capital this summer.
If Pepe wants PSG over Liverpool, there is every chance that Jurgen Klopp has already ended his interest in the Ivorian as the German’s policy of signing players who want the Reds over all others creates a bond in the squad that money can’t buy.
It’s looking more and more likely that Liverpool will go into the new season without making any more signings.
