Jurgen Klopp has uttered the most-feared quote of any summer transfer window, telling Liverpool fans that players returning from injury are to be considered as “new signings”.
As reported in Tuesday’s Telegraph, Klopp seemed to confirm that much of the club’s focus this summer is on players returning from injury and working on getting a full squad available for a busy 2019/20 campaign.
“If Ox can stay fit – new player for us. Rhian the same; he is a really big talent. So, new player.” said Klopp.
“Like Joe Gomez is pretty much a new player. Adam Lallana, new player.”
Many Reds fans will be concerned at the possible meaning behind the Liverpool manager’s comments, taking it that what has been a quiet summer in terms of transfers is set to continue right up until after deadline day on August 8th.
Only time will tell if Klopp is preparing Liverpool fans for an uneventful month ahead. However, he has never been one to divulge the club’s actual plans to the media, and why would he?
Liverpool announced Fabinho last summer, 24 hours after losing to Real Madrid in Kyiv. No-one had an inkling that the former AS Monaco man was signing for the Merseyside club or that Klopp and his staff were even interested in the Brazilian international.
Realistically, that’s how it should be. Michael Edwards and his scouting department like to go about their work away from the media spotlight and Klopp seems to be perfectly happy with that.
While there may not be quite as much action in terms of signings this summer, don’t write off The Reds bringing in one or two surprises just yet.
