Reported Divock Origi promise suggests no big Liverpool signing

Liverpool will reportedly promise Divock Origi a role as ‘first-choice backup’ if he agrees a new contract.

Origi, a £10m signing from Lille in 2014, enjoyed a truly legendary season with the Reds. His two goals in the Champions League semi-final helped Liverpool to a remarkable comeback.

Then came his crowning glory – a goal in the final to wrap the trophy up for the team.

But Origi’s contract is up next summer and Liverpool want him to sign a new one. Part of convincing him is the promise that Origi will be Liverpool’s first-choice as backup to the front three.

That’s according to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur, speaking on the Sky Sports Transfer Podcast.

Now, if that really is the case, it pours cold water on any hopes that Liverpool will sign a big-name player. The Reds certainly won’t be signing any attackers to start, while Origi would take the next spot. At best, a new signing would be fifth choice in the team.

It’s perhaps expected but we’ve only had reports so far. If Liverpool have told Origi this then you’d think that’s that – there is truly no room for another star.

Liverpool are set for a quiet window, then – but that may be a good thing.
