Liverpool have no plans to move for Ajax Amsterdam’s Matthijs de Ligt, according to the Echo’s James Pearce, and if this is true, Jurgen Klopp should postpone his plans to sign a starting centre back.
On Monday, the Merseyside-based newspaper reported that despite ongoing claims that Liverpool are pursuing an interest in the Dutch prodigy, the Reds won’t be making a move for the central defender this summer.
They rubbished claims that Liverpool had opened talks with de Ligt and his representatives and went on to say that Klopp is not looking to sign a new central defender this summer.
If this is true then the German will need to once again place his faith in Joe Gomez despite his troubling injury problems which have wrecked his Anfield career so far.
Since signing for the Reds, the 21-year-old has suffered five separate injuries in three years, missing a total of 565 days.
Given his incredible talent and sky-high potential, Klopp is apparently keen to persist with him and hope that his injury problems somehow vanish.
Dejan Lovren still needs to be sold and replaced with a defender in the same mould as Gomez. Young, quick and able to play break the lines with a pass or strong run from deep.
Joel Matip has impressed this season and so he is also an option next season but Lovren needs to be sold as he has constantly cost Liverpool in crucial moments.
Signing de Ligt is not the be all and end all as Liverpool had the best defence in the Premier League without him but by stealing the 19-year-old the Reds would insure their defence for a decade.
