Reports suggest that Liverpool are looking for a ‘versatile left-back’ this summer, representing a possible replacement for James Milner.

The BBC’s David Ornstein made the claim on BBC 5 Live. It’s apparently set to be a quiet window for the Reds, with only one or two players targeted.

One of the players Liverpool are allegedly looking for is a player who can cover at left-back. Now, that doesn’t necessarily have to be an out-and-out left-back and could instead just be someone who can play there.

The thing is, that’s the role that Milner has filled over the last three seasons. He was Liverpool’s first-choice left-back two years ago, of course, and has filled in for Andy Robertson since.

Robertson is first-choice and will be for a long, long time; a player who can play left-back and only left-back in unnecessary. It’s why Alberto Moreno is set to leave – he can’t get a game.

Milner is a centre-midfielder who is versatile to cover elsewhere. Liverpool looking for another player like that does sound like a replacement. Milner is the only player in the squad over 30, after all, while his contract ends next year.

It means that now is the perfect time to find someone who can cover. Moreno is off, leaving a space, and Liverpool don’t have too much pressure to get it right immediately.

A Milner replacement will be difficult for Liverpool to find, though – it’s a specialised and difficult role. The time is here to look, though, and it sounds like it’s the key position this summer.
