It is of no surprise that Virgil van Dijk has been crowned this season’s PFA Player of the Year.
The imperious Dutchman was the overwhelming favourite to scoop the prize after an incredible first full campaign for Liverpool.
Liverpool’s number four earned more votes from his peers than any other player, beating off competition from the likes of Raheem Sterling.

While it may have been close, there are several reasons as to why Virgil warranted the award over anyone else.
1. His leadership
Since his arrival at Anfield, van Dijk has displayed a tremendous level of leadership and command on the pitch.
Not only is he imposing in the physical sense, but also in his presence.
He can always be seen barking orders to his teammates to ensure that everyone is doing their jobs properly.

With all due respect, you don’t get that from any other of Liverpool’s defenders.
And this is something that is and continues to be vital to Liverpool’s success.
He has become a focal point for the team and is helping those around him improve as a result.
2. He rises to every challenge
There has not been a single game this season when an opponent looks like they’ve had van Dijk worried.
No matter who the opposition has been, domestically or in Europe, Virgil hasn’t been phased by anyone.
This means coming up against players like Eden Hazard, Neymar, Lorenzo Insigne, Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane to mention a few.

To face all of those and dominate them and not be dribbled past even once tells you everything.
His consistency has played a huge role in Liverpool’s assault on a Premier League and Champions League double.
Without him, I think we can all admit that things would probably be different.
3. His impact on the entire team
While Sterling was a strong contender for the award, this is probably the area where he lacks most.
Sterling has played a big part in Man City’s season, but they’d arguably be doing well if they didn’t have him.

Van Dijk on the other hand, has had an incredible, galvanising impact on his squad in every position.
He tightens up the back line, helps his midfield and gives his attackers confidence knowing he’s got everything in check defensively.
It’s rare that any player has the effect, let alone a centre back, which is for me, why he fully warrants the award.
