Manuel Neuer on success and failure of Alisson & Karius

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has spoken on Liverpool’s Alisson, as well as compatriot Loris Karius.

Both Alisson and Karius have been relevant to Neuer. Alisson, for instance, is one of a new group of goalkeepers gunning for the ‘best in the world’ title.

That’s a title that Neuer had sewn up for quite some time, even fighting as a front-runner for the Ballon d’Or in 2014. He was arguably Germany’s most important player in the World Cup victory that year, but things have been a little downhill since.

An injury at the start of last season left Neuer out of action for quite some time. It left the German captain with just three Bundesliga appearances and one Champions League game all season.

Sven Ulrich deputised for Neuer but a huge mistake in the Champions League semi-final undid much of his good work. After that, Neuer was always going to return to first-choice.

Alisson, on the other hand, saw his reputation skyrocket with AS Roma. He helped the Italians make the Champions League semi-final, enjoyed a decent World Cup, and earned a then-world-record move to Liverpool.

Neuer gave a brief opinion on the Brazilian, admitting he likes the way Alisson plays.

“I like his style,” he told ESPN. I’ve seen him at Rome, and I’ve seen him in the Brazil team, he’s doing a great job.”

But while Alisson is finding success at Liverpool, he’s doing so at the expense of Karius, a compatriot of Neuer.

Karius was voted as the #2 goalkeeper in the Bundesliga the year before he joined Liverpool – one place behind Neuer.

Most expected Karius to push on and get into the Germany squad but things fell apart at Anfield. The worst of it was, of course, in the Champions League final.

Karius made two catastrophic errors as Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid. Neuer spoke on that performance in his interview with ESPN, saying that he feels for his compatriot.

“I was with the national team, and we all watched the game together,” he said. “We hoped that he would do well – he’s a German keeper.

“I really felt for him. It was a sad day for goalkeepers.”

The game was a death knell for Karius at Liverpool. Instead, Neuer will face Alisson on Tuesday evening in a competition that has hugely impacted their careers in the past year.
