Dida highlights important asset Alisson brings to Liverpool

Ex-Brazil goalkeeper Dida hails Liverpool’s defence but believes Alisson plays an enormous part.

Dida was the first-choice goalkeeper at Internacional when Alisson was first breaking through. The latter would eventually replace the former and Dida believes it was obvious how talented the young goalkeeper was.

“I could see his qualities from the very beginning,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“He was very agile and quick to read the offensive schemes. It was very clear to me that he would become a top player.”

Fast forward four years and Alisson has followed in Dida’s footsteps by moving to Europe. Now at Liverpool, Alisson has established himself as not just Brazil’s number one but as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

He’s proven that alongside the rest of Liverpool’s back four this season. The Reds have the strongest defence in the country, conceding just 15 goals. Only twice in the Premier League has a team scored more than once against Alisson.

“Liverpool have conceded only 15 goals in the Premier League – they have the best defence,” said Dida.

“Clearly, it’s thanks to the whole team but certainly Alisson’s personality gives more confidence to defenders and consequently to the whole team.”

It’s a trait that Liverpool fans have long cried out for. Pepe Reina certainly had it, too, but his successors, Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, did not.

Both were accused of inspiring nerves within the Liverpool defence throughout their tenures. Alisson, alongside Virgil van Dijk, has done the opposite.

Nothing proves that quite like the rest of Liverpool’s first-choice back five. Alisson and Van Dijk are joined by Andrew Robertson, a signing from relegated Hull City, and Joe Gomez & Trent Alexander-Arnold – two players under the age of 22.

It’s a brilliant turnaround in fortunes for Liverpool – and they can thank Alisson for that.
