A report claims that Liverpool join three other clubs in pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot.

L’Equipe make that claim while also naming Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea.

The paper also mentions Tottenham Hotspur, although only because Rabiot has allegedly told them he isn’t interested in their offer.

Who is Adrien Rabiot?

Rabiot is one of the best centre midfield players in his age group – as the group of teams interested in him highlights.

He’s in an interesting position, however, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Barcelona were reported to have completed a deal to sign him on a free but Frenkie De Jong’s imminent arrival puts doubt on that.

Do Barcelona still need him? That’s arguable and suddenly the opportunity is there for other sides.

PSG aren’t at all happy with the situation, with the board completely suspending him from the first team.

Rabiot will move at the end of the season – he just needs to decide on the destination.

Do Liverpool need Adrien Rabiot?

Rabiot is an elite talent and Liverpool could find a place for him simply on that.

An extra consideration is James Milner, however. Milner will be halfway to 34 years old by the summer and replacing him does need to be thought about.

If we were discussing this in a year it would feel more like a certainty. Of course you’d move for a player like Rabiot when a key midfielder is 34.

Now, though, we know Milner can still play a key role, he can still compete in the big games. The need to replace him is not an immediate one.

How likely is it?

It will almost certainly depend on Barcelona’s remaining interest. They may well want both Rabiot and De Jong, although the Dutchman will make the former think twice about the move.

He’s not going to leave PSG to warm the bench and that might hurt the chances of both Barca and Bayern.

Liverpool would fancy their chances of beating Chelsea to his signature, if they do have an interest.

The timing might not be perfect but there’s a chance of this one. The source is solid, the player is of the right quality, and Liverpool are in a good position.
