Liverpool linked with January move for Adrien Rabiot

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot for several months as his contract runs down and there are now claims he could make the switch to Anfield during the January transfer window.

A 5-1 win over Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday saw Liverpool extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table and depending on how Manchester City’s game vs. Southampton goes, the Reds will start 2019 with a seven-point lead at least.

While the likes of Roberto Firmino will get most of the credit after a fine attacking display, it was in midfield where Liverpool bossed the game, with Georginio Wijnaldum putting in a 9/10 performance.

And despite how good Liverpool’s midfield has been this season, the likes of Adam Lallana and James Milner do not have long-term futures at the club given their ages and so Klopp will be looking to sign a midfield or two over the next 8 months.

PSG’s Rabiot – whose contract expires in the summer – is the subject of constant media speculation, with Barcelona and Liverpool perpetually close to signing the Frenchman.

The 23-year-old has said in the past that he loves Anfield and would almost certainly love being managed by Jurgen Klopp. The German’s managerial style suits young players whose full potential is as yet untapped.

Recent reports claimed that Barcelona have sealed a deal to sign the player in the summer on a free but the Mirror suggest that PSG don’t want to let him leave for nothing and will look to secure a fee for his services during the January window.

That’s where Liverpool come in. The Reds are linked as a side that might sign him for a minor premium and take him on mid-season.

Rabiot has reportedly been banned from the dressing room on match days, ‘with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and other club officials also shunning him.’ If this is true, it seems unlikely that the Frenchman will be at PSG come February.

That said, Liverpool don’t need him and I find it difficult to see Klopp pushing to sign him in January. As it is, the player apparently has his heart set on a move to Barcelona.
