Liverpool and Manchester United are set to lose out on the chance to sign Dutch sensation Matthijs de Ligt as Barcelona have reportedly won the race to sign him.
This season, Joe Gomez has finally been given an extended run in his preferred central defensive position alongside the imperious Virgil van Dijk and has been bossing it, with the former Charlton man earning plaudits week in, week out.
His long throw-in against Croatia allowed England to claw their way back into the tie and ultimately give the Three Lions the chance to win the game late on but it’s his positional awareness and recovery pace that continue to astound onlookers.
Gomez’s incredible form this season means that a report from the Mirror suggesting that the Reds are set to miss out on Matthijs de Ligt will not be too concerning as the Englishman will mature into a world class defender in his own right.
The Mirror’s Steve Bates reports that although Liverpool and Manchester United have shown interest in signing de Ligt, Barcelona believe they have won the race to sign the Dutchman.
This comes after Virgil van Dijk claimed this week that he would be happy to give Liverpool his professional opinion on van Dijk.
Asked about the prospect of de Ligt joining him at Anfield, van Dijk replied: “He will be on the list because they have enough scouts at the club.
“If they need my opinion at Liverpool, I’ll give it.”
