Reports from France indicate that Liverpool failed again in a bid to sign Ligue 1 defender Modibo Sagnan from Lens.
A demand made all summer by supporters on social media was for Liverpool to sign a new centre-back as depth at the back is actually worryingly thin past the starting pair of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.
The duo looks set to be Jürgen Klopp’s go-to central defence pairing for the next month at least as Dejan Lovren returns from a mysterious stomach injury aggravated at the World Cup.
Past those three defenders, Klopp can turn to Jöel Matip, whose injury record is worrying, and Ragnar Klavan, who is ordinary at best.
According to France Football, Liverpool have had a second bid for Modibo Sagnan rejected by Lens after the Reds made an approach to sign the 19-year-old in January.
While ‘reliable’ British journalists maintained throughout the summer that there was no intent from Klopp to sign a new centre back, it would appear there was some interest in Sagnan on Liverpool’s behalf.
I would have loved to see a Jamal Lascelles or even Harry Maguire arrive this summer but the players available to Klopp this season will have to do and barring any serious injuries, things shouldn’t be too bad.
Besides, a partnership between Gomez and van Dijk is quite exciting.
