Xherdan Shaqiri scored a belter in his first outing as a Liverpool player but the Swiss international says it’s just business as usual for him!
It may only have been a pre-season friendly but it’s always a great feeling to beat Manchester United. Especially by a scoreline like that.
The Liverpool fans in the Michigan Stadium crowd that was in excess of 100,000 strong, were treated to a real show from their team as they put four goals past Mourinho’s men.
Sadio Mané and Sheyi Ojo both showed nerves of steel to score from the spot either side of half time, while Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge combined spectacularly for the Englishman’s first goal of the tour.
It was however, the fourth goal, scored by new-boy Shaqiri on his first outing as a Liverpool player, that really set the fixture alight.
His debut had already gotten off to a good start after he’d outmuscled Eric Bailly to tee-up Sturridge but with ten minutes left on the clock, the Swiss international showcased exactly what Klopp had bought him for.
A looped cross was played into the box and the former Bayern Munich man unleashed an outrageous overhead kick, lashing the ball past a stranded goalkeeper who could only watch on as the ball rippled his net.
Shaqiri couldn’t have dreamed up a better debut performance if he tried and speaking to LFCTV post-match, was evidently delighted.
“It’s an amazing day,” he said.
“This is a great team with amazing players. I’m very happy!”
While his goal looked outrageous for the likes of us mere fans of the game, the Reds new no.23 astonishingly revealed it’s something he likes to try often and trains specifically for just in case he gets the opportunity.
“I always train on the bicycle kicks!” He revealed.
“It’s a beautiful goal and it’s amazing to play with this great team. I’m really happy. I want to show my football. I have a lot of experience and want to help this team going forward and today was a good friendly for us.”
“I’m really glad and happy to score in front of so many fans.”
Also on the scoresheet of course, were Daniel Sturridge and Sheyi Ojo, with Sturridge skippering the side in the second half.
The Reds’ no.15 was expected to take the second penalty, won by Andrew Robertson but reveals that he stepped aside when he saw just how confident Sheyi Ojo was that he would find the net.
“Sheyi wanted to take it. If he shows confidence, I’m not going to stand in his way, it’s about the young players,” he told LFCTV after the match.
Sturridge has looked sharp in pre-season, with many fans remarking that the striker looks fitter, leaner and notably quicker than in previous years.
The player himself however, is not getting too carried away as he hopes to remind Klopp and those at Liverpool whose opinions matter that he’s still got what it takes at the top level.
“It’s been a good vibe and great to play here,” he said of the Reds’ tour of the United States.
“I just want to work hard and try and help the team. I feel good but I’m not getting too excited. Just looking forward to the future and what I can do.”
“I just wanted to work hard through the summer, help the team and be successful. That’s what it’s all about, just focusing on improving. It’s a great group of lads, I feel good but I understand it’s a long season too.”
“I love it here. It’s the longest I’ve stayed at a team as a professional. I’m back here to give my all and to help us win something.”
