Why Mohamed Salah’s contract extension is Liverpool’s best piece of business so far this summer

Jack Hallows believes tying Mohamed Salah to a lucrative five-year deal is the club’s best piece of business so far this summer. 

The signings of Fabinho from AS Monaco and Naby Keïta from RB Leipzig have been fantastic pieces of business by Liverpool and I for one, am absolutely ecstatic to see them arrive on Merseyside.

However, the best piece of news I’ve heard so far this summer is that our Egyptian King Mo Salah has put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

Based on sheer numbers, Salah was hands down Liverpool’s best player across the 2017/18 season, scoring a ludicrous 44 goals in all competitions, breaking the Premier League goalscoring record – winning the golden boot in the process – and assisting a further 14 goals for his teammates.

He has even been heavily involved in the conversation regarding the 2018 edition of the highly coveted Balon d’Or award with fans, pundits and fellow players all believing the Egyptian would be a worthy recipient were he to win it.

To put it very simply, Mohamed Salah is an absolute blinder of a footballer.

To have him confirm that Liverpool Football Club is his “home“, as manager Jürgen Klopp put it, is astronomical for this club for so many reasons.

Of course, the first of those is that on the pitch, the Reds’ fearsome front three is only the sum of all of its parts.

Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané are both world-class players in their own right but it’s when they combine with Salah as a trio that the fireworks really go off.

The combination of raw pace, intelligence, sheer footballing talent and an almost kinetic understanding between the three was too much for even the most adept defences in the Premier League and Champions League alike to handle last season and with the addition of Naby Keïta and potentially Nabil Fekir to the Reds midfield, they’re only just getting started.

However, perhaps even more important is what Salah’s contract extension does for the club alongside his ability on the pitch.

For arguably the world’s third best player right now – behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – to affirm that Liverpool, not Real Madrid or Juventus or Bayern Munich is the place he wants to play football will certainly turn heads.

For players around the globe, the chance to play alongside and learn from a player of Salah’s quality and pedigree is a massive opportunity.

While Klopp’s Liverpool is first and foremost about the team, the Egyptian is now undeniably the main man and the chance to be a part of a stellar supporting cast will have talent worldwide looking at Liverpool as the place to be in English football.

The opportunity to play under a world class manager in a side that came within a breath of winning the Champions League last season is just the icing on the cake.
