Virgil van Dijk says that he is living his dream of romping through Europe with Liverpool after the Reds booked their spot in the Champions League final.

Football is a funny sport and although there is often heartbreak and disappointment, just as often there are moments where players, coaches or fans are rewarded for the time, effort and money they put in.

Andy Robertson, for example. This time last year, he was about to be relegated to the Championship for Hull City and although he was one of their standout performers in the league, there was heartbreak.

A year on and he has been a star for Liverpool at left back and has fans convinced he has the position nailed down for the next decade.

8 years ago, Virgil van Dijk was in hospital after two operations. The Dutchman had an abdominal abscess and feared he might not ever play football again. Now, however, he is living his European dream.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, van Dijk said: “It’s going to be a good one. I watched the Champions League final in Cardiff last year with a very good friend of mine. To be in the final now, it’s special.

“I was hoping for it but to be there just one year later, it’s amazing. It’s crazy, but I think it’s well deserved. We still have games to focus on in the Premier League and then we’ll be ready for Kiev.”

Van Dijk, with his typical confidence, says that Liverpool are going to Kiev to win the Champions League and will give Real Madrid a fight.

“If we do what we normally do – press high – then we can make it difficult for anyone,” the 26-year-old said. “You can be as good as you like, but if the opposition keeps pressing you, it’ll be very difficult.

“We’re not going there to lose. We know we have a lot of quality and so they need to be wary of what we can do. We also need to be wary of what they can do.

“We know that the last five years, they have been the big winners and have a lot of experience. We’ll be ready for it.”
