Liverpool fans will be delighted to hear that Roberto Firmino wants to stay at the club and feels connected with the city.
Arguably Jürgen Klopp’s most influential player, the Brazilian has become a fan favourite at Anfield and supporters have been dreading what might happen if he were to get injured or leave the club since Philippe Coutinho left the club last month.
Having scored 19 goals and set up a further 10, Firmino is no longer just a workhorse that chases down defenders. Ever since his transformation into a number nine, the former Hoffenheim midfielder has become one of the Premier League’s best players.
And now, in an interview with Esporte, Firmino has committed his future to Liverpool, saying that he has adapted well to the City and wishes to stay for many years.
“I believe that I and the team are evolving every season and this year we have had good games in all competitions,” the No. 9 said.
“I believe that the victory over Manchester City has been proof that our team will fight for good things and I hope that we can end the season celebrating a title with the fans.
“Liverpool are one of the greats in Europe and being able to be part of the history of such a great club is gratifying to me.
“I work hard every day to give my best and I believe that the fans, the coaching staff and the board recognise my delivery by wearing that shirt.”
Despite his best mate Philippe Coutinho leaving to Barcelona last month, Firmino is intent on signing a new deal with Liverpool, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2020.
Firmino continued: “I’m very happy here at Liverpool and I do not see myself out of that club for years to come.
“I feel very good here in Liverpool. I am very adapted to the city, the club, and the warmth I receive from the fans makes me even happier with the work we are producing.
“I have already participated in some marketing actions of the club and it has always been very nice to feel this affection of the young fans with me.”
Crucially, Firmino said: “And all this support makes me even more willing to conquer great things wearing the shirt of Liverpool.
“I am very happy here at Liverpool and my thinking is to build a history with many victories and titles by that club. I have a contract with Liverpool until 2020 and I hope to keep it.”
Tying Firmino down to a new deal is arguably the most important bit of business for the club going forward despite the need to sign a new goalkeeper and midfielder in the summer.
