Liverpool target Thomas Lemar dropped amidst transfer rumours

Thomas Lemar was dropped from AS Monaco’s squad to face Lyon in the Coupe de France on Wednesday evening and it has sparked intense discussion among Liverpool fans.

Another day and another rumour regarding Thomas Lemar and his potential move to Liverpool. Well, when I say rumour, I mean the Frenchman was actually left out of the match-day squad for Monaco’s Coupe de France tie with Olympique Lyon.

Yes, you read that right, Les Monégasques left their prized asset out of their matchday squad for last night’s game with Lyon. Leonardo Jardim originally named Lemar in his 20-man squad for the game but cut him out of the final 18. Interesting, right?

We might be reading too far into this. It might be that the creative midfielder was just simply being rested for their upcoming game against Marseille this weekend, but dropping the player in the midst of rumours linking him away from the club in such a high profile transfer is an odd move to make.

Rumours yesterday suggested that Liverpool had agreed terms with Lemar and were just waiting to reach an agreement with the French outfit over the transfer of the player.

The Red’s are sitting on £142 million after the sale of Philippe Coutinho to FC Barcelona and it seems like Monaco are doing all they can to get their hands on some of that cash. If the reports are to believed then the club are demanding €100 million for Lemar.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Jurgen Klopp himself has publicly stated that Liverpool won’t be forced into spending pointless amounts on players, but if the right player comes up for the right price then they could be tempted into a sale. By making such a claim did he panic Monaco into cashing in on their asset?

Are they worried that they’ve lost out on their big payday? Have they panicked due to Klopp’s comments and Arsenal turning their attention elsewhere? Or are we simply reading to much into the player being rested?

With all the mega money that’s being thrown around this January, it’ll be interesting to see whether Monaco stick to their guns or crumble under the pressure in the last few days of the window.

Strap in Reds, we could be in for a wild ride!
