Dave Davis is hugely impressed by the form of Joe Gomez and is only expecting his stock to rise in the coming weeks and months.
After a such a disappointing result in the derby, it was difficult to find many positives. Many fans on Twitter referenced our recent form, Salah’s goalscoring exploits and our European progression.
They haven’t gone completely unnoticed, but the recent performances of a certain player who isn’t part of the Fab Four aren’t getting the attention they deserve.
To those outside Liverpool, it would appear that Joe Gomez’s football career began with an impressive international debut against Brazil at Wembley. The 20-year-old looked more than accomplished playing centre-half on such a big stage, with numerous pundits praising such an accomplished performance.
It’s been a huge transformation for the former Charlton youngster who has gone from strength to strength since his £3.5 million move. Jurgen Klopp appeared to have him earmarked as a squad player, with many suspecting he may even struggle to get regular games at right-back with the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. After two major injuries, some initially questioned whether Gomez would make the grade at Anfield.
Since that night at Wembley, Gomez appears to have come back a more confident player. There’s a maturity to his play nowadays which was only exemplified by a man of the match performance against Everton. Real pace, a natural reading of the game and raw aggression are attributes that many are starting to now talk about on a more frequent basis.
It’s no secret that a top centre-half is required at Anfield, but Koppites arent looking at it the same way as before. Two would give everyone a boost, but if a player like Virgil Van Dijk was brought in to play alongside Gomez at the heart of our defence you wouldn’t find many unhappy.
You wouldn’t find many that don’t think he’s the best defender at Anfield right now. Such has been his rise many are desperate for the return of Nathanial Clyne for one reason. Let’s hope the progression continues!
