There is “no way back” for Virgil van Dijk at Southampton

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk could be one step closer to leaving his current club Southampton if today’s reports are to be believed.

Adam Leitch of the Daily Echo believes that “there is no way back” for the former Celtic defender now at the Saint Mary’s, with his transfer request likely proving to be the final nail in the saga’s coffin.

Leitch claims that van Dijk’s fiery letter of resignation means that “any chance of reintegration is gone” and that he has successfully made his position at the club “untenable.”

There were claims yesterday that Southampton would be willing to allow the Dutchman to “rot” by forcing him to “sit in the stands” for the entirety of the coming season and Leitch admits that this is one of two courses of action that the Saints could take.

However, he adds that it would be a foolish stance to adopt, even though he feels it would likely draw “a hearty round of applause from the footballing world.”

We’ve heard all summer that Liverpool would be willing to shatter their transfer record for the defender, paying an utterly obscene amount to satisfy the wishes of manager Jürgen Klopp and bring him to Merseyside.

At the end of the day, football – and the world of football clubs – is a business and to leave a £60m asset rotting in the stands would be foolish at best.

Leitch also echoes this sentiment by affirming that “the business reality is that he (van Dijk) needs to be moved on quickly. Saints have fought for him but this has surely gone too far now.”

Encouragingly for Liverpool, Leitch ends the article by claiming that while the saga is unlikely to be brought to a swift conclusion, “we know there is no way back for van Dijk now.”
