Ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has backed Steven Gerrard to learn from his under-18 coaching role and become a “great manager” in the future.
The connection that Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard shared on the field was nigh-on telepathic at times and it’s nice to see that even though the Spaniard did leave for Chelsea back in 2011, there is still that relationship between the pair.
Gerrard was announced as Liverpool’s new U18s coach back in April and takes on his first competitive fixture this Friday with a 1pm kick-off against Derby County.
His old mate Torres, who spent three and a half seasons playing alongside the midfielder, had his say on Gerrard’s managerial shift after the Reds’ meeting with Atletico Madrid in the Audi Cup earlier this month, earmarking him to become a “great manager” in the future.
“Of course I see a great manager in him,” the former Liverpool striker told the club’s official website after the meeting with Atletico Madrid in the Audi Cup final last week.
“From the times I’ve talked with him, I think he’s very happy and very excited. I think that’s the most important thing. He’s feeling happy back at his home and I’m sure he’s going to develop as a top manager, as he was as a player. Everyone in Liverpool loves him and everybody around the world loves Stevie. Hopefully he can be a great manager.”
Torres revealed that the pair have spoken recently as he reached out to Gerrard to wish him luck in the next stage of his Liverpool career and that he believes the former England midfield has made the right decision starting lower down the pecking order.
“Just to wish him all the best,” the Spaniard responded when asked about if they’d had any communication of late.
“He’s very happy and very excited. I’ve been talking with the guys on the staff now and they told me the same. I know for him it’s a great chance to become Liverpool manager one day and he has a great manager in Jürgen Klopp to have a look.
“I think it’s important for him to start with the U18s at a club he knows,” he added.
“He knows about the club, about the fans, about what the people like to see at Anfield, so he has everything.”
