Jamie Carragher has given his thoughts on Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and whether the Reds will still move for Virgil van Dijk.

Jamie Carragher has always got something to say and to be fair to him, he is usually right when it comes to Liverpool Football Club.

The ex-Reds centre half has given his opinion on the two biggest stories surrounding Liverpool right now – moves, albeit in opposite directions, for Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk.

Starting with van Dijk, the former Liverpool man hit out at the Dutch defender and the manner in which he’s conducted himself while going about handing in a transfer request but admitted there is a “football chain” and that he is sympathetic to the player’s cause.

“I think it’s wrong. We’d all be very angry if it was a player at our own club, if I’d played with someone where that was the case,” Carragher said of Van Dijk’s statement while speaking on Sky Sports.

“But not he other hand if you’re looking to move, which he is, what about your fitness levels if you do get that move?

“The frustration for Southampton when you put in a transfer request is that this is for every club except possibly Real Madrid and Barcelona there’s a football chain. And if you’re at Southampton and Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester City come in, your player will want to go. There’s nothing wrong with that, that’s football.”

Carragher continued to explain his point by commenting on FC Barcelona’s attempted move for Philippe Coutinho. ‘Carra’ was positive in his assessment that he doesn’t think the Brazilian will leave just yet but pointed out that it’s inevitable that once a club like Barcelona come knocking, it’s only a matter of time before they get what they want.

“It’s the same with Philippe Coutinho and Liverpool today. I don’t think he’s going to go, but he would want to go.”

“Who wouldn’t want to go to Barcelona? There’s ways of going about it. I’m sure whether it’s this summer or next summer Philippe Coutinho will want to wear that shirt and go to Barcelona.

“There’s nothing wrong with it. That’s football. Hopefully what van Dijk has said today is the truth and he hasn’t refused to play in games or train. I accept that from a player but unfortunately for Southampton that is the football chain. Liverpool are above Southampton, and Liverpool have the same problem with Madrid or Barcelona.”
