Ben Woodburn on his goal against Athletic Bilbao

Ben Woodburn has revealed that he had been working on his left-footed finishing ahead of the Reds’ clash with Athletic Bilbao.

It really was some strike, wasn’t it?

The young Welshman received the ball on the edge of the area, turned and fired the ball into the bottom right corner with his weaker foot. Not bad for a 17-year-old.

The striker revealed to Liverpool’s official website that the finish wasn’t just a matter of luck but the result of hours of work put in on the training ground over the summer.

“It came to me on the edge of the box. I took a touch and just hit it on my left foot. Luckily it went in,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I’ve been practising a little bit on my left foot and it worked. Recently, I’ve been hitting them a lot cleaner. When you see a player dive in, you think ‘I’ll shift it and have a quick shot.’”

Woodburn entered the fray at half time as Klopp opted to change his entire outfield ten with goals from Roberto Firmino and former Reds target Inaki Williams seeing the game evenly poised at 1-1.

The youngster was once again fielded in a deeper midfield role by manager Jürgen Klopp who has opted not to pigeon-hole the youngster into one position this early in his career.

The German recently spoke of Woodburn’s versatility being a major positive, revealing he doesn’t care where the youngster plays, only that he is “happy to have him around.”

“When the manager says something like that, it obviously does give you a little boost of confidence,” Woodburn revealed.

“It has been good, it has been different. I’ve been learning a lot in that position – hopefully, that can carry on.

“I’m happy with how the pre-season has gone. Hopefully, I can kick on in the season as well. (My target is) to keep improving and get games where I can.”
