Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has fired a warning to Jürgen Klopp’s Reds ahead of their Champions League play-off qualifier.
Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann has warned Liverpool that his side will not be an easy opponent for the Reds in their play-off qualifier and that he has already begun planning a way to beat them.
The 30-year-old steered his side to an impressive fourth placed finish in the Bundesliga last season as he continued furthering his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising, young coaches. Not one to dwell on past achievements, Nagelsmann has already begun plotting the Reds demise.
“This morning I joked by saying ‘if you want to lift the trophy you also have to overcome Liverpool’ as I felt it would be Liverpool,” he said.
“They’re definitely not jumping for joy in Liverpool due to the draw. It’s great for the awareness of our club that this draw will bring us fully into the spotlight.
“This is somehow Murphy’s Law. Luckily, I’ve been looking at it this week at the Audi Cup. These were two very good games. It is, of course, a very difficult team, but there was no real easy draw anyway. We can play against a great opponent in a legendary stadium. This is something special.
“Liverpool is an outstanding team, Bayern Munich was unimpressive. I already have an idea how we can prepare for this trip. But we still have to look at one or the other game to work out a plan.”
Hoffenheim’s emergence as one of Germany’s top clubs is not only down to Nagelsmann however, with German billionaire Dietmar Hopp also to thank for pouring funding into the club. Hopp spoke to Bild recently and revealed his belief that all the pressure will be on Liverpool to perform.
“As we expected, we got a very heavy opponent,” he said.
“The game against Liverpool with their coach Jürgen Klopp is, of course, something very special for us. I’m looking forward to seeing him again with Roberto Firmino.
“We can approach this extraordinary task without hesitation, full of self-confidence and joy. We have no pressure and can only win. Julian will adjust the team optimally.”
