Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp during their Audi Cup press conference on Monday afternoon.
If anyone knows the brilliance that Liverpool Football Club can bring to European competition, it’s Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian was at the helm for AC Milan during that fateful night in Istanbul when the Reds turned around a 3-0 deficit, pulling back three goals of their own to take the Serie A giants to penalties and of course, the rest is history.
During a four-way press conference on Monday afternoon to preview the Audi Cup, Ancelotti revealed just how impressed he’s been by the Reds’ recent resurgence under Jürgen Klopp and believes they’ll be a real force to be reckoned with during this season’s Champions League – if they can get past their playoff opponent.
“Liverpool did a fantastic season last year. They played really well,” Ancelotti said.
“They fought for the title, they reached qualification for the Champions League. I think the Champions League this year will be more competitive because there are really important English teams in the competition – United, City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool.
“I hope Jürgen will win in the qualification round and then Liverpool will help make the Champions League more competitive. It will be more difficult to win.”
Liverpool play Bayern on Tuesday evening with the winner playing against whoever comes out on top in the day’s earlier game between Atletico and Napoli.
While both managers recognised the importance of the mini-tournament due to the quality involved, it has extra importance for Ancelotti who will be hoping to use it as a springboard before his side’s clash with Dortmund on Saturday.
“It’s very important for us,” Ancelotti said.
“This is a great tournament with good teams.”
