Jamie Carragher has tipped Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho to give the Reds at least 12 more months before making any switch to a La Liga side.

Speculation over the future of Philippe Coutinho has been rife this summer and unfortunately for us Reds fans, links to Barcelona simply just won’t go away.

The Catalan giants are said to be readying a second bid for the Brazilian after seeing an initial £72m water tester turned down but the Reds are adamant that he will be going absolutely nowhere. Not this summer at least.

Speaking to 5Times in an exclusive interview, ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher has revealed that he too expects Coutinho to remain on Merseyside, even if just for another 12 months.

“Hopefully we can get 12 more months out of him. When he signed his five-year deal, I didn’t think that he would see it out,” he said.

“There is no doubt that at one stage in his career Philippe will want to play for one of the Spanish giants, as many of the South American players do. Barcelona and Real Madrid are seen as the two biggest teams in world football, who always have the best players.

“It’s always the dream of many players to play for one of them, so we can’t really complain about that.”

Carragher does, however, believe that there is an inevitability factor about Coutinho eventually signing for the Catalan club, following in the footsteps of Luis Suarez who left for Spain back in the summer of 2014.

The defender believes Coutinho would be the ideal signing for Barcelona who are said to be looking for a Neymar replacement and an heir to Andres Iniesta.

“It’s been said that Barcelona want to make a big money signing, not only because of the danger of losing Neymar,” he continued. “But also with Andres Iniesta coming to the end of his career, Barcelona see Coutinho as the ideal signing.

“To be honest, I think that Liverpool fans should really enjoy him over the next 12 months. As if a big-money offer does come in at the end of next season and if the player wants to play for Barcelona, then there is not really much Liverpool can do.”

“Like I said, let’s just hope we see him in a Liverpool shirt next season, which I think we will, and then let’s see where things go from there.”

It’s been so far so good from Coutinho in pre-season this summer, with the Brazilian scoring one goal of his own and notching up a further two assists, including this beauty for Mohamed Salah against Hertha Berlin last night:
