Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan – who played under Klopp at Dortmund – has tipped Liverpool to be title contenders in 2017/18.
Some words of high praise from Manchester City and Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan today as he tipped Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side to challenge for the title this season.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Gundogan highlighted the Reds among Manchester United and Chelsea as the biggest threats to Manchester City’s title hopes this coming campaign.
“Liverpool as well as a team – especially with Klopp – are who I also really like. They have a lot of potential. A great team and is also playing a different style of football. (They’re) really difficult to control,” said Gundogan.
However, the German admitted that predicting who will wind up as title winners is a pointless task given the unpredictable nature of the Premier League, citing Leicester’s miracle 2015/16 campaign as proof.
“It’s obvious who the big teams in England are and who are the competitors for the Premier League title,” the German added.
“Leicester was a bit of surprise two years ago. Maybe next year it will be another team, or even them again. So you never know!”
Klopp so far does have an impressive record against Manchester City in the Premier League, coming up against the Citizens four times and enjoying an as of yet unbeaten record across his two campaigns – three wins, one draw.
Gundogan, however, is yet to come up against his former manager as injuries kept him out of much of his first season in English football.
Liverpool begin their 2017/18 Premier League campaign August 12th away to Watford while City kick off theirs on the same day with a trip to newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion.
