Dejan Lovren was chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch after he returned to Melwood for pre-season training on Saturday.

The fans are excited for it, Klopp seems ready for it and the players look to be chomping at the bit to return to action on the field tonight when the Reds take on Tranmere for the first of their pre-season friendlies. None more so than Dejan Lovren.

“It’s always good to play in the beginning against ‘smaller’ teams, just to feel the ball, to feel the team, (see) how we react in some situations and how we breathe like a team,” the Croatian told Liverpool Football Club’s official website.

“We did it quite well last season, we had a couple of really quite good games, but then it depends on every one of us so hopefully we’ll do (the same) again. The most important thing is to not get injured.”

The Red beat Tranmere 1-0 thanks to a late Danny Ings winner when the two teams met in pre-season before the previous campaign and Lovren, who featured for 45 minutes that day, is expecting more of the same from the plucky lower league side.

“It’s never easy, I think, in England, especially against ‘smaller’ teams. They want to prove to everyone else that they can compete against Liverpool and that’s fair enough,” he said.

“But then, the quality depends on us, and like I said last year we did quite well.”

When asked about his own personal pre-season so far, the defender revealed that he’s excited to be back preparing for the coming campaign and that he finds the training “enjoyable” due to being surrounded by his team-mates.

“It’s great to be honest, I missed this place a lot. It’s great to be back with the lads and to have a chat. It’s great to work again and hopefully everyone will be fit,” he continued.

“(Pre-season is) enjoyable because you’re not alone, you’re working hard with your teammates, but also at the same time it’s quite hard physically. But it’s important to be fit and to be ready for a long season.”

You can catch the Reds game against Tranmere Rovers on LFCTV and LFCTVGO tonight at 7.45pm BST.
