Liverpool Football Club have been urged to sign Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney this summer as a suitable replacement for James Milner.
Liverpool are in the market for a left-back, there’s no denying that.
Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham and Andrew Robertson of Hull have been continuously linked in recent months, while the likes of Faouzi Ghoulam of Napoli, Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy and Dalbert Henrique of OGC Nice have all been tentatively mentioned as well.
However, former Chelsea and Manchester United star Ray Wilkins has now thrown his own suggestion into the hat and it’s one that comes from a little further outside the box.
Speaking on TalkSPORT’s ‘Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast‘ show, Wilkins suggested that the Reds should be looking to sign 20-year old Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.
“I think Tierney could (be a hit in the Premier League),” said Wilkins.
“I think if Liverpool are looking for a left-back to release James Milner, Tierney looks an outstanding left-back.”
Tierney has been a hit for Brendan Rodgers title-winning side, turning out for the club 40 times last campaign and despite his age, looked a solid, composed presence more often than not.
The young Scot – who can also play centre-back – was handed his international debut for his country last year, before being handed the captain’s armband for the second half of Celtic’s first pre-season friendly against FC Blau-Weiß Linz.
At 178cm tall, the 20-year old is a solid physical presence and being naturally left-footed, would be able to maintain the side’s width a lot better than James Milner – who is often forced to cut inside onto his favoured right boot – managed for most of last season and in a summer that is going to see the Reds need to spend big in other areas, would likely represent an affordable option.
